Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) at Geelong Gallery

Geelong Gallery, with its extensive permanent collection and annual exhibition program provides schools with a valuable resource and form the basis of programs designed for Level 1 to 6 of the three interrelated strands of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards and for VCE Art and VCE Studio Arts.

The Arts domain is central to the development of visual literacy and thinking skills, essential for students preparing for a life in a post-industrial economy dependant on innovative ideas, creative use of technologies and problem solving skills. Art is central to the development of visual literacy and thinking skills. A visit to the gallery encourages students to develop personal and social skills outside the classroom.

The presentation of ideas and activities are designed to stimulate imaginative or creative responses of visiting students. Prior to individual schools visiting the Gallery, teachers are encouraged to discuss their groups' specific requirements to be addressed during their visit.
