2015

2015 was one of the busiest years for Geelong Gallery in its history. Celebrating 100 years since the opening of the George Michelmore Hitchcock Memorial Art Gallery, Geelong Gallery staged the exhibition 1915 revisited – a collection in residence to explore the history of the building and the key acquisitions that were part of the collection at the time. A contemporary sculptural response to the architecture of the building by artist Lisa Young was also commissioned, titled Framework. 

The Geelong Gallery Foundation established the Hitchcock Society to acknowledge the generous support provided by philanthropists during Geelong Gallery’s formative years, and those who more recently, have supported Geelong Gallery through bequests.

2015 was also an exciting year for Geelong’s cultural precinct with the opening of the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre, and the addition of a Temporary Exhibitions space for Geelong Gallery, which has since hosted a number of acclaimed exhibitions. 

Australian artist Sophie Cape won the 2015 Geelong acquisitive print awards with her work The devil’s firmament.
