Born into space—sculpture from the collection

18 August to 15 October 2017

So proclaimed the acclaimed Japanese American sculptor, designer and landscape architect Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988), on his prolific experimentation with new materials and concepts for sculpture from the 1940s onwards.

This display from the Gallery’s collection includes works by several generations of Australian sculptors, each of whom had—or still has—an interdisciplinary practice of working across diverse media and techniques. Forms of abstraction from nature, plays on classical architecture, and the potency of totemic forms subtly link each of the artists here through works spanning several decades.

‘Everything was sculpture. Any material, any idea without hindrance born into space, I considered sculpture.’
