Howard Arkley—white drawings
This exhibition profiles a suite of ten ‘white’ drawings by Howard Arkley dating to the mid-1970s and gifted to the Gallery by the artist’s Estate in 2016. Drawn from a corpus of 258 ‘white’ drawings, they reveal something of the exceptional range of Arkley’s graphic investigations. They exemplify his openness to experiment and chance; his mathematical precision and refined sense of line and pictorial composition; his testing of the technical capacities of various media (pen, brush and ink, airbrush); and the development of a lexicon of graphic approaches and shapes that directly inform the 25 highly important paintings central to this period in his career.
