Views of Geelong and beyond—treasures from the Geelong Gallery collection

Saturday 8 September to Sunday 25 November 2018

Geelong Gallery was established in 1896, and today is one of Australia’s leading regional galleries. Since its first acquisitions in 1900, the Gallery has collected the work of Australian artists with a particular focus on images of the landscape, the evolving city of Geelong, and the surrounding region.

This selection of paintings, works on paper and colonial silver includes some of the nationally significant pictures and objects that distinguish the Geelong Gallery collection. The Gallery’s holdings represent the works of Australia’s most important and critically acclaimed artists—especially those who transformed the way we see and understand Australian landscapes and our sense of place.

Here we represent major acquisitions, images recording Geelong’s history and development since European settlement, and artists’ diverse interpretations of the wider Australian landscape, as well as contemporary photographs in which portraiture, collecting and the act of viewing are explored.
