1907
Throughout 1907, advocating for a permanent location continued to be of primary concern—a goal the Geelong Art Gallery Association had now been working towards for over ten years.
Towards the end of the year new works were acquired, including The church cat by English artist Julia Meyer. Meyer had exhibited the work at the Royal Academy of Art, London, where it was purchased for the Geelong Gallery for £15 by Oscar Ferdiand Armytage.
Meyer’s work captures a cat in a church alongside a woman and a child. The intimate connection between the figures is juxtaposed by the grandiose architecture of the church, the scene combining elements of the sacred and the everyday.
