1910
Geelong was officially declared a city in 1910. Geelong was known as an industrial city due to the various woollen mills, Ford Motor Company and the Corio Whiskey Distillery. The word Geelong was derived from the Wadawurrung name for the region Djillong, which means ‘tongue of land’.
This image by Fred Kruger was photographed in the 1880s and shows the Western Beach foreshore at the time.
