Charlie Sofo’s works often evolve from his wanderings through neighbourhood streets. Stepping out from his studio, he observes and collects life’s incidental details, finding meaning in simple processes, materials and actions. Walking is important to Sofo as a means of ‘searching and finding, as a ritual or observation’.

In Cracks, faults, fractures he sequences multiple pairs of feet, clad in various footwear, rocking on uneven or unstable floorboards, tiles, pavers and footpaths and he records the distinctive sounds generated from these fault lines. Sofo combines the visual language of street culture with minimalist gesture in a work that yields a strikingly varied soundtrack of cracks, squeaks, grating and banging. In Cracks, faults, fractures Sofo draws our attention to the creative potential of the everyday.
