Rodick Carmichael—the Australian years

Saturday 6 August to Sunday 25 September 2005

Born in Edinburgh and trained at the Edinburgh College of Art in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Roderick Carmichael had achieved a position of standing amongst his peers prior to immigrating to Australia. While his painterly techniques and highly emotive use of colour reflect his Scottish origins, during his years in and around Geelong he has embraced themes that dominate Australian art such as the landscape.

This exhibition of over twenty major paintings and works on paper documented the significant themes, stylistic developments and philosophical concerns that characterise Carmichael's studio output from his arrival in Australia in 1974 until 2005.

Rodick Carmichael—the Australian years, was part of Geelong Gallery's series of exhibitions held by the that featured the works of little-known colonial artists of Geelong and Victoria’s Western District.

To coincide with Rodick Carmichael—the Australian years at Geelong Gallery, Brougham Art School and Gallery presented Rodick Carmichael—works on paper, from 8 August to 2 September 2005.
