Views of Geelong and beyond—treasures from the Geelong Gallery collection

Saturday 21 October to Sunday 10 December 2017

Views of Geelong and beyond represented major acquisitions, images recording Geelong’s history and development since European settlement, and artists’ fascination with the natural beauty of the Barwon River, Corio Bay, Surf Coast and Western Districts, to name just a few local and nearby sites of inspiration.

Geelong Gallery was established in 1896, and today is one of Australia’s leading regional galleries. Since its first acquisitions in 1900, the Gallery has collected the work of Australian artists with a particular focus on images of the landscape, the evolving city of Geelong, and the surrounding region.

The selection of paintings, works on paper and colonial silver included some of the nationally significant pictures and objects that distinguish the Geelong Gallery collection. The Gallery’s holdings represent the works of Australia’s most important and critically acclaimed artists—especially those who transformed the way we see and understand Australian landscapes and our sense of place.
