1902
James Whitley Sayer was an integral figure in Geelong Gallery’s establishment, but he was also an incredibly talented artist.
In 1902 he donated his work, The Cowrie Pool, Torquay to the Geelong Art Gallery Association. The Cowrie Pool, Torquay depicts Sayer’s four youngest children on a beach outing at Torquay, where they regularly spent their summer holidays.
This work, like much of Sayer’s works, beautifully captures what we recognise and love about Geelong and the surrounding areas, the landscape.
