In 1912, long time supporter and founding member of the Geelong Art Gallery Association, George Michaelmore Hitchcock, passed away.
Hitchcock was a prominent politician, businessman and philanthropist in Geelong who contributed several works to the permanent collection. Among these works was Fawkner and his press and Buckley acting as interpreter at Indented Head by Blamire Young, acquired in 1903.
In recognition of the significant contributions Hitchcock made to the cultural life of the City, the Geelong Art Gallery Association started to raise funds towards the construction of the G M Hitchcock Memorial Art Gallery.
