Although the foundation stone was laid in February 1914, it wasn’t until May 1915 that Geelong Gallery welcomed the public inside its doors.
The opening was a grand event, with Chief Secretary, the Hon. John Murray, officially opening the building. Between 300–400 Geelong Gallery subscribers attended the event, where they viewed works under electric lights and listened to the city band play in the Johnstone Park bandstand.
