1932

In 1932 the last stage of the Great Ocean Road was built, which connected Lorne and Apollo Bay, completing the famous stretch.

Well-known Geelong businessman and former Mayor, Howard Hitchcock, started the Great Ocean Road Trust in 1918 to fund the road’s construction, although unfortunately he passed away just months before its completion.

Thirteen years after construction began in 1919, the completed Great Ocean Road finally welcomed its first travellers. Harold Herbert’s Sunlight gleam, Lorne offers a rare glimpse into the area in the 1930s. While the road itself is not visible in the work, it can be speculated that Herbert used the road to reach a vantage point to capture this work.
