1991
In 1991, Australian artist Allan Mitelman gifted two works by fellow Australian artist Gareth Sansom, The green pavilion and Study for a portrait II.
Depicted in the upper section of Study for a portrait II is Gareth Sansom's friend and fellow Melbourne-based artist, the bearded Stuart Black (1937–2007). Sansom met Black in 1966 after Black tried to crash Sansom's house party. They would then occasionally meet at Toorak Teacher's College (later Melbourne State College), and soon Sansom became a regular dinner guest at Black's Prahran house.
Black lectured at the Melbourne College of Advanced Education in its different guises from 1967 to 1982 and his legacy remains at the Victorian College of the Arts through the Stuart Black Memorial Bursary, Stuart Black Travelling Scholarship, and the Stuart Black Memorial Drawing Scholarship.
