Kate Beynon

Victorian Curriculum, The Arts, Visual Arts, All levels

This resource promotes four capabilities within the Victorian Curriculum F–10; Critical and Creative Thinking; Intercultural; Personal and Social, and Ethical Capability and the cross-curriculum priority of learning about Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia.

Interpret and explore key works from Geelong Gallery's collection in the classroom or virtual classroom with a Gallery on Tour kit.

Our 2021 Gallery on Tour box focuses on Melbourne-based artist, Kate Beynon’s work Graveyard scene / the beauty and sadness of bones, 2014–15. This free art-making kit includes everything needed by educators to engage remote and regional students in visual arts learning and facilitate a meaningful connection to their closest gallery collection:

—An introductory video
—An information resource on the artist and work
—Discussion questions
—An art-making activity

Engage your students in their visual arts learning and facilitate a meaningful connection to this significant artwork, from their closest regional gallery's collection.

In this workshop, students explore Kate Beynon’s use of materials and techniques as a source of inspiration for their own artwork. This activity responds to Kate Beynon’s use of symbols in her artwork—students create a soft sculpture that represents a personal symbol.

Gallery on Tour has been developed to support schools in the Barwon South region of Victoria with an engaging and practical arts experience aligned to the Victorian curriculum. The kits were designed to support an engaging 90-minute workshop facilitated by a classroom teacher (or where possible a Gallery educator onsite).

Learning objectives

—Provide an opportunity for students to engage with the visual arts—making, viewing, discussing, analysing, interpreting and evaluating

—Expand students’ critical and creative thinking using visual languages

—Expand students’ respect for and acknowledgement of the diverse roles, traditions, histories and cultures of artists

—Provide students with a connection to Geelong Gallery’s permanent collection
