Artist statement:

When I first saw photographs of sea birds that had died from malnutrition after ingesting fragments of marine plastic, I began to collect bread tags. All I thought of at this stage was that if I held onto the plastic, it wouldn’t end up in the ocean.

After my collection grew, I began to enjoy the muted colours and shapes and was soon incorporating them into my art practice, initially as a series of small sculptural works.

This recent work is part of a series of tessellations using the distinctive colours to draw out different geometric patterns. The serial nature of the work draws attention to our obsession with consumption which ironically is contributing to the extinction of species from malnutrition.
