Statement:

The symbols in Winged realm no. 31 articulate concerns about the health of our ecology and its survival, compounded by anxieties related to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In Winged realm no. 31, lotus buds, large stones or egg like shapes, a human heart and a mutated sea creature reveal notions of fragility and rebirth. A symbol of beauty in Hinduism, purity in Buddhism and rebirth in Egyptian legend, the lotus is a recurring image in the Winged realm series. It stands as a delicate reminder of the natural world’s regenerative power.

The Winged realm series urges that we may free ourselves or find liberty and clarity by losing ourselves in art, literature and nature. By creating mythical landscapes to be immersed in, Jo provides a vessel for reflection and engagement with the forces of nature.
