Artist statement:

This painting refers to expected and desired conditions of its encounter in the public realm. It was made in a tilt slab warehouse (not good in earthquakes) that was converted into artist’s studios by architect Pascale Gomez-McNabb and philanthropist Dr. Terry Wu. It was made in anticipation of being encountered elsewhere. It looks forward in time and presents an image of an audience. In this Geelong Gallery context the audience is now faced with a painting that already carries an image of an audience. The audience in the gallery encounters a painting that is supplying its own audience. The painting refers … blah blah blah. Look – it’s a painting of viewers that have been hijacked via magazines and Instagram from other artists' exhibitions … they have been gridded, skewed, and distorted.
