Artist statement:

During lockdown my love of the spud was shared and displayed by others over and again. The news coverage showed us a never-ending montage of toilet paper hoarding, but what I witnessed firsthand was a craving for the humble potato! The dirty varieties, those ones that are unwashed and unaltered. At the fruit and veg wholesaler I work at the people spoke with their cash as they slung their burlap sack over their shoulder and back to the car. What this 20Kg mass presented was a sense of comfort in the knowledge that this sack of starch would give them an affordable edible sustenance that no other can, it is the companion that you can trust and one that has so much adaptability that together you can create and enjoy all sorts of delights! This humble root vegetable bridges class and ethnicity and its universality is the reason that I will always be its humble servant bowing down at its carbohydrate rich throne.

I love you spud!
