Artist statement:

Exploring the divisive contemporary issue of cancel culture within Australia, this work investigates issues at hand at a time when we look to unite the country through constitutional recognition for First Nations people. However, colonial symbols such as this monument to Captain James Cook remain ever present and at odds with this progressive debate. These monuments often become the focus annually on Australia Day, through acts of vandalism where red paint is cast upon them referencing the bloodshed of colonisation. Cancel culture divides the conversation between those who wish to wake up and break free of this colonialism, with those who see it as an integral part of our national story. Return to sender takes a personal position on this debate, whilst recognising the problematic nature of rectifying this past as a nation collectively.
