Artist statement:

Painting for me, has always been predicated on a notion of incessant conceptual pursuit and experimentation to illustrate how it can capture ideas of process, matter and space. My oeuvre has centred around an ongoing dialogue with the broader lexicon of 20th century Abstraction, which has led to numerous activities that have iteratively engaged with the process of making paintings, exploring the medium of industrial polymer paint into studies of colour, form and materiality in an attempt to define a unique material language of painting.

Cut painting (PB) is part of an ongoing series of works that uses colour as a vehicle to encapsulate these ideas to present them within the paradigm of painting. The surface becomes evidence of activity, suggestive of some mode of process and performance. The cuts into the surface are suggestive gestures and signs of my presence after the fact, promoting folds of colour into the environment of the viewer, and posing fundamental questions regarding the nature of space, artistically and philosophically. The Cut paintings become markers of time, of my thinking and energy embedded into the surface.
