Jill Orr’s engagement with the Australian landscape, and the paintings of McCubbin, is further evidenced in the series The Promised Land, comprising a performance, suite of photographs, and a sculptural installation.

The Promised Land—Still was set in Orr’s local environment of the Yarra River wetlands near Ivanhoe—close to where McCubbin, Tom Roberts and Louis Abrahams forged their own vision of the Australian landscape in the late 19th century. The series alludes to the treacherous journeys of refugees seeking safe destinations.
