END THE HUNT 2025

Artist statement:
Inspired by the fragility of marine ecosystems, I aim to draw attention to the beauty of endangered underwater species in stark contrast to their threatened future. END THE HUNT addresses the mass slaughter of manta rays (mobula birostris)—one of the ocean’s most intelligent and captivating species. Through the intricate technique of stippling, the work depicts two manta rays and their unique features. The red text introduces a visual tension symbolising violence, blood, and urgency.
Despite their vulnerability, manta rays remain largely unprotected and are heavily overfished in Sri Lanka for their gill plates which are used in alternative medicine (though the benefits are unsubstantiated). Through my artwork, I aim to raise awareness on the issue and present manta rays’ playful and graceful demeanour in contrast to the hidden brutality they face.
