The Alpha Project was completed in the former machine rooms of the decommissioned Alphington Paper Mill ahead of its demolition and the redevelopment of the site. In the partially demolished industrial building Rone completed five murals, exploiting the Mill’s monumental scale and the raw material qualities of the remaining structure. The murals documented in these photographs came into being through a paradoxical process of removal: the artist removed layers of grime built up over a century of operations, exposing brickwork and enabling him to paint the tonal range that gives form to the portraits. That all that remains of this project are photographs printed on paper is a poignant reminder of the Mill’s industrial history.
