In a 2015 artist statement, Katherine Hattam described Bridge Merri Creek as:

‘a collage of my photographs of the outside world, that bridge over the Merri Creek, and my kitchen table—or my internal world. What interests me is the way we experience the world outside our heads—coloured by what is going on inside.’

Hattam’s works pay homage to the spaces she inhabits, her complex and layered landscapes recalling the accumulative aesthetic of a visual diary. Through her practice, Hattam aims to make visual the psychological, with the bridge portrayed here symbolising, in her words, ‘that metaphorical bridge between two worlds’.
